Processor generation affects software support, security features, efficiency, and media capabilities. A fast older chip may still be a poor fit when the operating system is nearing the end of support.
Leave useful headroom
Buy enough capacity for expected software growth, but avoid paying for performance your workflow cannot use. Memory and solid-state storage are often more noticeable than a small CPU step.
